How do markets develop renewable electricity trading?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, there was no market.
The government regulates the price in a tariff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then market liberalization comes\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spot market is established.
Every day, parties talk and agree on the price for tomorrow\u2019s delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then market participants start talking\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David, the Customer, says: \u201cHey, I\u2019d like to fix my price for the next year.\u201d
Anna, the Account Manager from the Utility, says: \u201cLet\u2019s do it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The forward market is established.
Every day, parties talk and agree on the price for next year\u2019s delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then, customer’s investors strat asking about #sustainability of their operations\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David: \u201cHey, I\u2019d like a certificate my electricity comes from renewables.\u201d
Anna: \u201cLet\u2019s do it. I\u2019ll give you mine, and if I\u2019m short, I\u2019ll get the rest from 3rd parties.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As a result, an Energy Attribute Certificate market is established.
Every day, parties agree on the price for the certificate of electricity attributes, e.g., source\/time\/region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then, the customer gets accused of #greenwashing by his customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David: \u201cHey, I was accused of greenwashing. You were supposed to sell me renewable electricity.\u201d
Anna: \u201cI did certify that there\u2019s a match between the amount of electricity I sold you and the amount of renewable\u2026
David: “Yeah, but in Norway in January. I’m in Spain and consume 24\/7\/365.
Anna: “Ok. I’ll sell you hourly certificates from Spain, but remember the sun does not always shine and the wind does not always blow.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As a result, a market for hourly Energy Certificates is established.
Every hour, parties agree on the fair price for the hourly certificate of renewable electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if the mix of renewables changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carbon emission factors kgCO2\/kWh consumed change as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
